Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are there any additional costs other than you fees?

The only extra costs will be the DSA examination fees which are currently £50 for each attempt at Part 1 and £79 for each attempt at Parts 2 and 3. You are limited to three attempts at the Part 2 and 3 examinations.

2. How long will the training take?

How long is a piece of string? It varies enormously from trainee to trainee but on average we estimate that it will take about four months to get to the stage where you have passed Part 2 and completed the training to enable you to go out on a Trainee Licence and a further four to five months to pass Part 3. So on average around nine months in all. However someone has passed in three months whilst another has taken fifteen months.

Remember that you could be working in four months!

3. What can I expect to earn when I start?

An instructor teaching for forty hours in a week could expect to earn around £600 less petrol costs and substantially more if using his/her own car. However earnings will vary according to the driving school at which the instructor works.

4. What would my holiday entitlement be?

This will vary from school to school but normally your franchise fee will be waived for a certain number of weeks each year to allow for holidays but you will not be earning in these weeks.

5. Where will my new pupils come from?

From the driving school’s advertising programme and personal recommendations. The latter source should increase substantially as your career progresses.

6. Do I have any other Tests once I have qualified?

Yes you will have a periodical “ Check Test“ to make sure that you using the correct teaching methods. This will be carried out by a Senior Examiner sitting in the back whilst you teach one of your pupils. This Test should not worry you as you will be offered help and advice to prepare you for it
